Bringing Two Data Standards Together to Power Student Success

MiDataHub streamlined student data management by integrating 1EdTech’s OneRoster® and the Ed-Fi Data Standard, providing educators with streamlined access to insights needed for data-driven decision-making.

Building on this and other successful programs, the Ed-Fi Alliance and 1EdTech Consortium are launching a new pilot to help more schools use both standards.

Educators require timely, reliable data to support their students. Managing multiple education technology systems often makes that harder, not easier. When student information is scattered across different platforms, pulling meaningful information together is time-consuming—valuable time that could be directed to assisting students.

Michigan districts faced this challenge firsthand. To solve it, the Michigan Data Hub (MiDataHub) integrated two key data standards—1EdTech’s OneRoster® and the Ed-Fi Data Standard—to make data more accessible and actionable in the MiDataHub ecosystem. This effort streamlined how schools connect students to the resources they need while giving educators insights to improve learning outcomes.

Connecting Students to Resources from Day One

The first step in making data work smarter is ensuring that schools can securely share key student information across different platforms. MiDataHub used 1EdTech’s OneRoster standard to sync roster details and grades across the Student Information System (SIS), Learning Management System (LMS), and assessment tools.

Because OneRoster is widely used, schools have access to a variety of education technology tools that integrate seamlessly. That means students and teachers can start using these educational technology applications on day one—without delays or technical roadblocks.

Turning Data into Action

Once schools start using these tools, they generate valuable student data. To be useful, that data needs to be accessible and easy to interpret. That’s where the Ed-Fi Data Standard comes in. MiDataHub used the Ed-Fi Data Standard to organize and manage student data, making it easier to track student progress, identify those at risk of falling behind, and measure the impact of support programs.

Instead of spending hours logging into different platforms and manually pulling reports, educators can now access a single, comprehensive view of student progress. Our partners, School Data Solutions and Munetrix, help present this data in a way that makes it easy for teachers and administrators to use—whether for day-to-day decision-making, state reporting, or program evaluation.

Building a Smarter, More Integrated System

MiDataHub’s approach saves schools time and gives educators the insights needed for data-driven decision-making. But there’s still room for improvement. While both OneRoster and the Ed-Fi Data Standard help streamline data, they weren’t originally designed to work together, requiring extra time and resources to integrate each into the MiDataHub ecosystem.

That’s why MiDataHub joined the pilot program with the Alliance and 1EdTech—to create a more seamless, coordinated solution. By making these two data standards work together, schools will be able to manage data more efficiently, reducing the time, cost, and effort required to make data-informed decisions.

With better integrated tools, educators can focus on what matters most—helping students succeed.
