Empowering Identity: Building a Strong, Secure Authentication Management

Poster Presentation  |  January 16, 2025  |  4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Imagine a classroom where technology empowers learning, not hinders it. Constant logins and access struggles are a reality for K-12 educators and students, diverting valuable time from instruction. But there's good news! Leading K-12 districts and edtech suppliers have collaborated to develop a groundbreaking K-12 Identity & Access Management (IAM) standard. Technology is often a point of friction and distracts from the focus of educating students when it doesn't work as expected. The prime challenge is logging in and having appropriate access. While there are well-established best practices of Identity & Access Management that are operational in most other industries, K12 has lagged behind due to the fact that these enterprise standards fail to meet the needs of K12. The rise in cyber security incidents within education systems drives a need for an identity and access management standard that bolsters the security posture of institutions. How identity and access propagate across education ecosystems varies widely from system to system and institution to institution. The K-12 community has come together to develop a groundbreaking Identity Management specification standard. This session unveils this new standard and its potential to revolutionize K-12.

Stronger Together: K-12, Higher Ed and Vendors Collaborate on Data Privacy and Security

Poster Presentation  |  January 16, 2025  |  4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Data-sharing agreements are a key component of protecting student information and privacy. Recognizing the need for more efficiency and better understanding, the 1EdTech community worked together to create a new resource to simplify data-sharing agreements, protect student privacy, and minimize the need for time-consuming redlining of individual contracts. The Open Data Privacy and Security Agreement (DPSA) Template creates a more efficient agreement that works for suppliers across state lines, ensures student data security to save time on legal processes, and makes it easier to do business with states, schools and universities with a standardized agreement.

Trust In Your Ecosystem: Confidence in Security, Privacy, AI and Accessibility

Poster Presentation  |  January 16, 2025  |  4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Finding the right educational technology tools for your classrooms, schools, and districts can be overwhelming as new options arise and the technology continues to evolve. Fortunately, there are tools to help sort through the options and find technology that protects student privacy, takes the necessary precautions to keep information secure, and considers the needs of all students. In this session, we’ll consider three new rubrics on Generative AI Data Privacy, Security and Accessibility, developed by a collaboration of educators and edtech suppliers, that can be used in selecting edtech tools. The Generative AI Data Privacy rubric addresses disclosure policies and transparency and encourages the examination of data; the Security Practices rubric promotes transparency to support an understanding of the various components of security practices and policies; and the Accessibility rubric provides a common framework for discussions and evaluating tools about accessibility with tool providers and suppliers.

Maximizing Insights While Reducing Efforts by Using Standards

Concurrent Session  |  January 17, 2025  |  8:00 AM - 8:45 AM

Panel members will share how the use of multiple interoperability standards (including 1EdTech and Ed-Fi) used in tandem in district and state ecosystems are providing opportunities to share in work efforts to decrease the time to gain insights regarding student success. By utilizing these standards in their ecosystems, panelists will share how collaboration and sharing of resources leveraging Ed-Fi and 1EdTech are increasing the ability to gain understanding across multiple state and district contexts. Members of the panel will include thought leaders from school districts, state agencies, partner organizations, and standards organizations.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Tim Clark, VP K-12 Programs, 1EdTech Consortium
  • Dr. Debbie Durrence, Executive Director - Data Governance, Gwinnett County Public Schools
  • Keith Osburn, Chief Information Officer, Georgia Department of Education
